"Matinee" (01/02)
by S. ClarkNat pushed her way past the throngs of perfume women that waited, just inside the store doors, ready to swoop upon unsuspecting shoppers. She was tired, she was crabby, and the last thing she wanted was to end up smelling like a combination of the spring, summer and fall's latest scents.
It'd been a long shift, more cases than usual. And, just when she'd gotten through it and could kick off her shoes and curl up on the couch, she'd gotten a call from Nick.
He'd 'accidentally' gotten stuck here at the mall. And, since it was late morning, he wouldn't be going anywhere for a while.
With a resigned sigh, Natalie agreed to meet him, and help him pass the time. But now, as she made her way through the crowds, she was wondering why she was making the effort.
She wasn't fond of crowds. She didn't like malls. And, truth be told, there were times she wasn't sure she was fond of Nick.
Not that she didn't like him. That wasn't it. She liked him plenty. In some ways, too much. It was the liking back that was always a problem, always unsatisfying. She wanted more. He wanted a friend.
So, dutiful Nat. Best friend and good buddy. Should be sleeping. But no, here she was, passing the little carts that sold the cheap earrings, making her way past the grease smells of the food court.
Somewhere, near the entrance of the theater, Nick waited. He'd said it was the darkest place in the mall. If only that were the case, then maybe she could get some sleep.
Who knows, maybe she could talk him into a movie. His treat, of course, and catch a few winks. Wouldn't hurt to try.
Nick was seated on a bench, looking forlorn.
Natalie wondered at the sight of him. In most cases, he was confident. Even overbearing at times. But here, he just looked like any of the other men stranded in a mall.
Usually they were perched on chairs, sitting quietly. Outside of ladies dressing rooms, or maybe near a fountain. But all over it was the same.
Nat thought of it as the 'bored husband' syndrome. But, it appeared, the 'stranded vampire' syndrome had many of the same symptoms.
"Hey," she said, walking up to him.
He smiled and stood to meet her. "I guess I didn't plan too well today."
Natalie laughed. "I guess not. You know, the stores don't open until after the sun comes up."
Nick shrugged. "I needed some binoculars. The manager offered to open up early for me."
"And what happened?"
"I should have realized I was dealing with a salesperson. He promised to open early. I arranged to get inside well before dawn. But..."
"He never showed?"
Nick nodded. "Well, not until after it was too late."
Natalie rolled her eyes. "Why didn't you just leave?"
"I wanted the binoculars," he said. "But I think maybe it would have been best if I'd waited."
Natalie could see it now, the epitaph on her tombstone. 'Victim of impulsive vampire.'
"Well, I'm dead..."
Nick raised an eyebrow at her choice of words.
"...if we're going to stay here, let's get into a movie theater. At least that way I might be able to grab a nap."
"I guess you're tired."
"Just a bit," she said, trying to keep the icy tone from her voice.
"And you stopped by the loft?" he asked, anxious.
"Yes, I stopped by the loft."
Nick turned towards the marquee. "What should we see?"
"I don't care, Nick. It's up to you."
Nick walked over to the box office.
Natalie rubbed at her tired eyes, and decided it was best if she didn't get involved in this part of the process. He could have a hard enough time making up his mind as it was.
He returned to Natalie a minute later, tickets in hand. "I've selected." He placed a hand under her arm and ushered her into the theater.
Natalie pointed to some seats near the wall, off the side aisle, near the back. "Let's sit back here," she suggested.
"But I'm not sure the view is as good."
"Nick, I just want to sleep." She tried not to make it sound like a whine, but wasn't sure she succeeded.
"Here's great," he said, waiting as she led the way towards the seats.
The theater was recently redone, and had the stadium style seating. Nick and Nat left the armrest up between them.
"Do you want any popcorn?" he asked.
"No."
"Soda?"
"No."
"Chocolate."
"Ummm, if I must."
"I'll be right back," he whispered, and hopped up out of the seat.
While he was gone, Nat looked around the theater. It was empty, besides herself. She figured it must have been the early show. After all, who'd want to spend the morning in a dark theater.
She was almost dozing off when Nick returned, his arms laden with boxes of candy.
"I wasn't sure what you wanted," he said, "so I got one of each."
Natalie smiled and grabbed the peanut M&M's. She dumped the rest of the boxes in her bag. "I'll save those for later," she whispered.
She leaned against Nick as the previews started. "What's the movie, anyway?"
"I'm not sure. I just asked if there was any theater that hadn't yet sold any seats."
"Really?" she asked, a little leery. "Why?"
Nick grabbed across her, and into her bag.
Natalie couldn't help but notice the cool trace of his hand as he reached across her legs. She'd worn a short skirt, and, seated, his hand had come in contact with her bare skin.
"I wanted peace during dinner." He withdrew a green bottle, and uncorked it. "Cheers," he said.
She toasted his lunch with her box of M&M's. "Cheers."
Nat sat the candy down in her bag and closed her eyes, leaning back into the cushioned chair.
"Scoot this way," Nick whispered into her ear. He placed a hand on one shoulder, and was guiding her so her back was towards him. Once she was seated sideways, he started massaging her shoulders.

"Matinee" (02/02)
by S. Clark"Does this make up for calling you out this morning?" he asked, whispering over the sound of the feature.
"It's a start," she said. She tried listening to the sound of the film, but it was just a bunch of yelling from what she could tell. Instead, she concentrated on the firm hands working at the knots in her shoulders.
Nick's hands traced down her back. "What do I have to do to make it better?" he asked. Again, the seductive whisper.
Don't go there, Lambert, she told herself. You'll just be disappointed. "Surprise me," she said. "You choose."
The next thing she knew, Nick had tucked his hands into the waistband of her skirt, and began pulling her blouse loose.
"Nick?" She was feeling light headed, and resisted the urge to giggle. "We're in a public place."
"We're the only people in a very empty theater," he said. "I'm not overstepping my bounds?"
"Perhaps," she teased.
"Then, may I have permission to invade your personal space?"
Nat leaned her head back on his shoulder. "Invade away."
His hands roamed up the front of her blouse, inching their way slowly up her breasts. He unbuttoned the first button, and then leisurely continued to the next.
Natalie was torn between her sense of propriety, and the fact that after a few years, Nick had finally made amorous advances towards her.
She realized, if worse came to worse, Nick could help her relocate. It was worth the risks.
He moved slowly down the front of the blouse. While stopped over her breasts, his thumbs traced over the nipples, through the fabric.
Natalie resisted the urge to moan. Instead she reached a hand back, and the rough denim that covered his thigh, showing her appreciation.
Once he'd opened all the buttons, he reached up to her bra. She hadn't worn one that opened in front, but that hadn't stopped Nick. Oh well, she was at a mall. She could always replace anything damaged later.
Nick's hands returned to her breasts, proceeding with his massage. Her nipples raised to hardened points as he teased each between a thumb and forefinger.
His lips traveled over her throat, up to her ear. He took the lobe in his mouth and sucked gently. Natalie let out a soft moan.
He placed a hand under her chin and guided her head back, so his lips could meet hers. Their tongues met, and teased.
Natalie broke away, just long enough to turn to where she was facing him. Each sat sideways as they continued in their embrace, still engaged in the time honored tradition of making out at the movies.
Of course, this was the first time Nat could ever remember making out at the movies. But there was nothing like making up for a lost youth. And Nick seemed to allow her to make up, with a vengeance.
He placed a hand on her outer thigh, and ran it up under her skirt. His hand cupped her buttock, kneading it.
Natalie let her own hand do some wandering, down to the crotch of his pants. She was very pleased to find a normal, human reaction to their activities. This was something she'd have to mark in her notes. Later. Much later.
Her actions stirred Nick forward. He bent down, again investigating her breasts, only this time with his mouth.
"Oh, Nick," she whispered. "Ohh, yes, oh, AUGH!!!"
Nick looked up, wondering at the cause of Natalie's distress. His fangs hadn't yet descended, and any biting he did, she seemed to have enjoyed.
But the he saw her eyes. Her illuminated eyes. And he turned around. There was an usher at the aisle, shining a light right in her face.
The young man seemed just as stunned as Natalie.
Nick hopped up and walked, slowly, to the young man. Natalie, recovering slightly, pulled her blouse around herself.
When he was close enough, Nick grabbed the usher by the collar, and snatched his flashlight out of his hand. He shined the light in the young man's eyes.
"You will forget what you saw in here," Nick said.
"I will forget," repeated the usher.
"You didn't see anyone in this theater."
"I didn't see anyone."
"This whole theater is closed. You'll stand guard and not let anyone in."
"But I have a lunch break in..."
Nick concentrated harder. "I said you'll stand guard and not let anyone in."
"I'll stand guard..." droned on the young man.
"Now go," ordered Nick.
The usher turned and walked out.
Nick returned to Natalie's side. "Now, where were we?"
"Trying to decide how to pass the day," she said, seductively.
"Oh yes." He leaned in for a kiss. "We'll have to spend..."
"...hours..." she said, picking up the sentence, and returning a light kiss.
Nick smiled. "Hours. I can manage that."
Natalie returned his smile. She'd have no end of notes after this particular research. Of course, repeated experiments would be necessary.
She began unbuttoning his shirt. "Good." She'd always wonder how the vampire healing factor might translate into other areas of his life.
Neither of them ever learned what movie was showing. Even after sitting through it three times.
