Background:
This bit of insanity was written back in October/November of 2001. I
forgot about it during the cancer mess, lost it after my hard drive
crashed and burned, then again after my floppy disk fizzled out, and have
just now finished going over it and getting it ready to share with all of
you.
BIG THANK YOU to Jeannie and Judy for proof-reading this for me~ your
help was invaluable, ladies!!
This is set somewhere close to the end of the second season, but takes
an alternate route from the way the show went.
Comments are always welcomed!
Enjoy!

Halloween Hokum
by KC Smith
April 2002

Nick entered the morgue and stopped short in confusion; a stranger sat
in Nat's chair, but the heartbeat and scent were Natalie's. "Nat?"
Natalie looked up from her perch on the edge of her desk and the report
she'd been perusing and grinned. "Hi, Nick!"
"Nat, why are you dressed like that?" Nick asked, slightly amused. He
walked over and kissed her on the cheek.
Nat chuckled. "An old college friend invited me to a Halloween costume
party. I saw this and couldn't resist. It's a little unusual for me,
though."
Nick nodded his agreement, as he once again checked her out from head to
toe.
Her hair was pulled back in tiny strands and held in place with little
butterfly clips; they formed an arch just behind the crown of her head.
The rest of her hair was loose and fell lightly down her back. She wore a
Kelly green sweater that was tighter than anything he'd ever seen her
wear before, and it buttoned down the front. The top three buttons were
left undone, just hinting at cleavage and revealing the gold sweetheart
locket she wore. She also wore a pleated plaid skirt in green, red and
blue that was definitely shorter than would be allowed at any school Nick
had ever known of. Her smooth legs were bare and she had on little white
ankle socks with lace trim.
The outfit was completed with a pair of shiny black shoes that buckled
at the sides and a pair of gold, wire rimmed glasses resting daintily on
her nose.
Nick gave her a crooked grin. "You know, I like this new look on you."
Nat returned his grin. "Wanna be my date?"
Nick hesitated. "I don't have a costume."
"You could go as a vampire homicide cop. You yourself told me that
Halloween is the one time of year when you don't have to be quite as
careful about hiding what you are." She said, taking his hand and
massaging it with her thumb.
Nick was finding it difficult to concentrate. "I did say that, didn't
I?" He looked into her eyes and was suddenly lost. "Okay." He said,
smiling.
Nat lit up. "Good."
"I'll have to meet you there, though. I have to get the Kissinger report
over to the Captain, first." He told her.
Nat nodded and grabbed a piece of paper from her notebook. She scribbled
the address and phone number on it and handed it to him. "It starts at
ten o'clock and is supposed to go pretty much all night. I put the number
on there, in case you need to get a hold of me."
Nick pocketed the paper and smiled. "Thanks."
Nat picked up a folder and handed it to him. "You'd better go over it,
just in case you have any questions."
Nick nodded and opened the folder, taking a seat in her chair.
Nat grabbed the folder she'd been looking at when he arrived and began
reading it again, still perched on the front edge of her desk.

Schanke entered the Coroner's Building and stopped at the security
desk to check in, before sauntering down the hallway. He stopped outside
the door to Nat's lab and strained to hear what the voices inside were
saying. When they finally stopped, he waited for a few more seconds,
before pushing open the door. He entered the lab and froze in his tracks,
his jaw dropping and his eyes bugging out. He couldn't believe what he
saw before him.
Nick looked up when he heard the door open and smiled at the look on
Schanke's face. He could hear his partner's accelerated heart rate and
breathing, and... was that drool trickling from the corner of his mouth?
He stifled his chuckle, as he spoke. "Hi, Schanke. What brings you down
here?"
Natalie moved the report from in front of her face and smiled brightly.
She stood and held her arms open wide. "Hiya, Schank! Like my Halloween
costume?"
Schanke made a strangled noise and his eyes crossed, just before he
passed out cold.
"Schanke!" Natalie shrieked, moving swiftly to her friend's aid. She
knelt beside him and loosened his tie and the first two buttons on his
shirt, checking for a pulse. Relieved to find one, she tilted his head
back and checked to be sure that he was breathing.
An alarmed Nick knelt on the other side of her. "What can I do?" He
asked Natalie.
"Get me the bottle of smelling salts from the top drawer of my desk."
She told him.
He hurriedly complied and handed her the bottle, recoiling when she
popped open the cap.
Natalie gave Nick an apologetic look, as she held the bottle under
Schanke's nose. When he began coughing, she moved the bottle away from
his nose and told Nick to help him sit up. She resealed the bottle and
set it on her desk and pulled a few items from her medical bag, hurrying
back to where Nick and Schanke were. She kneeled again and stuck a
disposable thermometer in Schanke's mouth, and listened to his heart and
lungs.
Schanke's eyes bulged again as he took in Natalie's appearance. He
squeezed his eyes shut and tried to think of harmless, boring things, but
it was no use. The image was burned into his brain.
Natalie frowned up at Nick. "His heart is racing and his breathing is
shallow and irregular. I think we ought to get him to a hospital."
Nick tried to conceal his amusement, as he shook his head.
Natalie caught the look and raised a questioning eyebrow.
Nick tilted his head, almost imperceptibly, and looked towards the front
of Schanke's pants.
Natalie followed his gaze and her eyes widened, her hands flying to
cover her mouth. Blushing from head to foot, she quickly averted her eyes
and stood, pulling the disposable thermometer from Schanke's mouth and
focusing on the numbers: 37 degrees centigrade. Well, his temperature was
normal.
Nick helped his partner to a standing position and led him over to
Natalie's chair, telling him to have a seat. He offered to get him some
water and walked over to where Natalie now stood near the sink. "Are you
okay?" He asked her, keeping his voice low, as he grabbed Natalie's mug
and filled it with cool water from the tap.
Natalie glanced at him. "Um, yeah, sure." She said, though not meeting
his gaze, as she was totally embarrassed by Schanke's reaction. "Whatever
brought that on?"
Nick looked her up and down. She really had no idea how gorgeous she
was. Leaning a bit closer he whispered, "I can't say that I blame him. I
had pretty much the same reaction, myself."
Natalie blushed to the roots of her hair again. "I'm going to the
ladies' room."
Nick nodded, smiling, and took Schanke the cup of water.

When Natalie returned to her lab, Nick and Schanke were gone. Sighing
with relief, she took a seat at her desk and found a note in Nick's
writing:
Nat: Took Schanke back to the precinct. I have the Kissinger file for
Cohen. See you at the party. Love, Nick.
Nat smiled and set the note aside. Glancing at her watch, she realized
that she didn't have much time before she was due at the party. She
finished reading the report she'd been going over and grabbed her jacket
and purse, before heading out.

End Part 01

Halloween Hokum

Natalie was thoroughly enjoying the party, and her third scotch on
the rocks, when Nick arrived. She smiled at him, as she saw him across
the room. Apparently he'd gone home and changed. Waving to get his
attention, she began making her way across the room to meet him.
As Natalie approached, Nick noticed the appreciative stares of the males
in the room. He silently quashed the jealousy building inside of him, as
he realized that she took no notice of anyone else in the room. Her eyes
were for him and him alone. Smiling, he met her halfway and pulled her
close, kissing her lightly. He could smell the alcohol on her breath and
idly wondered how much she'd had to drink in the two hours she'd been
there.
"I'm so glad you made it." Natalie said, as she led him to a quieter
part of the room.
"So am I. I turned in the report to the Captain and then took Schanke
home, before running home to change. Do you like my costume?" He asked,
his golden eyes sparkling merrily.
"I love it." She said, smiling as she eyed the turn of the century
tuxedo with tails, the top hat and the black silk cape. "I thought you
didn't go in for the Hollywood Dracula stereotype?"
Nick shrugged. "It suits my needs, tonight." Leaning forward, he
teasingly bared his fangs at her. "Watch yourself, milady, or I may just
decide to sample your wares."
"Don't make promises you don't intend to keep." She quipped, as she set
her drink down and led him to the dance floor.
Nick raised an eyebrow at this, but didn't comment. He gladly took her
into his arms and led her in a slow waltz around the floor. A salsa
number was next and Nick was pleasantly surprised to find that Natalie
was rather good at it. When it was over, he led her from the dance floor
and to the bar, where he ordered her a club soda with lime.
"This isn't what I've been drinking, you know." Nat pouted, as she
accepted the glass from him.
"I know." Nick said, accepting his own glass of merlot. "But right now,
I think it's a good idea. We can't have you getting drunk now, can we?"
Nat smiled lightly and sipped at her drink, as she took his hand and led
him around the room, introducing him to the people there that she knew,
and meeting a few that she didn't.
They mingled and danced for several more hours, before Nick finally
suggested that they take their leave.
"Did you drive over?" He asked.
Nat shook her head. "No. I had planned to stay here at the hotel,
providing there are any rooms left. I even got my neighbor to look after
Sydney for me tomorrow."
Nick raised an eyebrow at this tidbit, before suddenly grinning. "Then
come and spend the day at the loft with me." He suggested.
Nat looked into his eyes, as if considering for a moment, before
smiling. "I'd like that."
Nick took her hand in his and led her towards the exit, where he
retrieved their coats and Natalie's overnight bag, and tipped the person
handling them. He helped her with her coat, before leading her to the
elevators and out into the cool October evening.

At the loft, Nick removed his coat, hat and cape and hung them on the
coat tree by the door. He turned and helped Natalie remove her coat,
hanging it there, as well.
"I'll go change." Nat told him.
Nick grabbed her hand to stop her. "Please don't. Change clothes, I
mean."
Nat raised an eyebrow, but smiled. "Um, okay." She said, setting her bag
on the dining table. She watched in bemusement, as Nick went about the
loft lighting every candle he could find. When the last candle was lit,
he turned off the lights and the loft was filled with a warm
yellow-orange glow. Then he stood in front of her, taking her hands in
his. It had begun to storm outside and the loft was periodically lit with
the flash of lightning and filled with the rumble of thunder. "I had a
good time tonight." He said, softly.
Nat smiled shyly. "I did, too. Thank you for coming to the party."
Nick drew her closer, slowly. "My pleasure, I assure you." He leaned
forward and lightly brushed her lips with his own. "We should do things
like that more often."
"Go to Halloween parties?" Nat asked with a twinkle in her eye, as his
lips tickled hers again.
"Yes; and anywhere else where we have the chance to relax and enjoy
ourselves. Neither of us do that enough, I think." He said, continuing to
lightly tease her mouth with feather soft kisses.
Natalie's breathing had increased slightly. "I think you're right." She
said, breathlessly. She didn't hesitate as Nick pulled her into his arms
and devoured her mouth with his own. She allowed him to mold her body to
his own and didn't protest when his hands reached behind her and cupped
her firm derriere.
Nick had allowed the vampire out for most of the evening, even while
driving home. He'd fed well before heading to the party, and had taken a
flask with him to add to his wine throughout the night. Therefore, he
felt more in control than he had felt in months. He allowed his hands to
reach under Natalie's skirt and caress her cotton-covered bottom, pulling
her closer to him as he kissed her deeply, exploring her mouth with his
skillful tongue.

Natalie moaned softly, yielding to Nick and steadfastly refusing to
wrap her legs around his waist in wanton lust. When she finally came up
for air, she took a deep shuddering breath and sighed contentedly. "Wow."
She breathed, smiling.
Nick returned her smile, his showing the tips of his fangs. "Do you
trust me?"
Nat stared deeply into his eyes, her heart never missing a beat. "Yes."
Nick turned her away from him and pulled her body against his, lifting
them into the air.
Natalie gasped in surprise, but remained calm as Nick flew them up to
the highest window in the loft. She smiled as he carefully sat them on
the windowsill with her on his lap, holding her in his firm embrace. When
she was certain that they weren't going to fall, she looked out the
window into the stormy night and was awestruck. It was beautiful.
The lights of the city twinkling outside, the sound of the rain as it
tapped against the glass and the thunder as it clapped above them,
combined with the occasional bright flash of lightning illuminating the
world around them, was simply breathtaking. She could see the dark
outline of Lake Ontario not far away and the twinkling lights of ships
out on the water.
"Oh, Nick..." She whispered. "I don't know what to say. It's beautiful!"
Nick nuzzled her neck, inhaling her fragrance. "Pretty incredible, huh?"
Nat just nodded.
They sat in silence for a while, just watching the world outside. When
they finally spoke, they spoke in hushed tones, sharing stories from
their childhood, regrets of past mistakes and even their dreams for the
future. Both were relieved, if a bit frightened, that their future dreams
included each other.
All the while, they shared sweet kisses and lingering caresses.

End Part 02

Halloween Hokum
by KC Smith
April 2002

Just before sunrise, Nick carefully floated them down to the floor of
the loft again, just before the automatic shutters closed for the day.
He told Natalie to get herself something to eat, while he fed again.
They sat on the sofa watching the early morning news while they each had
their meals. Then Natalie went to the bathroom and came back out to take
her seat beside Nick on the sofa again. When the news was over, Nick
turned off the television and stood, taking Natalie's hand and pulling
her up to stand beside him. He looked over her in the schoolgirl costume
once again and grinned, thinking to himself that he'd have to find out
how much it would cost to purchase it.
"What?" Nat asked suspiciously, seeing the way he eyed her.
"Oh, I was just wondering how much it would cost me to buy that for
you." He told her honestly.
Natalie's jaw dropped. "You're kidding, right?"
Nick shook his head. "Oh, no. I really like it."
Nat involuntarily glanced down and blushed when she saw the large bulge
in his pants. Averting her eyes, she swallowed hard.
Nick kissed her knuckles. "Don't be embarrassed, Nat." He said softly.
"You are very beautiful."
Nat looked into his eyes and the protest forming on her lips died. In
his eyes, she really was beautiful. Smiling shyly and blushing, she tried
to look away, but Nick gently took her chin in his grasp and pulled her
mouth to his, kissing her deeply.
He wrapped his arms around her and twined one hand in her soft curls,
while the other found her smooth bottom again, pulling her hard against
him. He kissed her like this for several minutes, before pulling slightly
away, trailing kisses along her jaw to her ear. "Come upstairs?" He
whispered.
"Yes." Came the soft reply and Nick lifted her into his arms and carried
her up the stairs.
Once in his bedroom, Nick set her on her feet and turned on the bedside
light, and then pulled back the covers on the bed. He pulled her back
into his arms kissing her again, as his fingers nimbly began undoing the
buttons on her sweater. When he had them undone, he pushed the sweater
off of her shoulders and let it fall to the floor before covering her
lace-covered breasts with the palms of his hands. He massaged each one as
he continued to kiss her, while she undid the buttons on his shirt.
When she finally removed his tie and pushed his shirt off of him, he
reached behind her to unfasten her bra, letting it fall to the floor with
the rest of the clothing. She began unbuckling his belt, then undid the
buttons on the fly. She smiled when she heard his soft sigh of relief and
lightly cupped his erection through the material of his underwear.
Nick groaned at her touch, and undid the button and unzipped the zipper
at the back of Natalie's skirt, letting it fall to the floor. He waited
a moment as Natalie pushed his pants and underwear off of him, stepping
out of the material pooled at his feet. He watched as Natalie helped him
out of his shoes, and then his socks, before standing up to face him
again. He couldn't help but be pleased by the look of admiration on her
face.
Pulling her to him again, he kissed her fiercely, massaging her breasts
with his palms, before pushing her underwear to the floor. He sat her on
the edge of the bed and kneeled before her, unbuckling each shoe before
removing it. He left the lace-trimmed anklets on and smiled lecherously.
"I think I like these better on you."
Natalie blushed, but nodded.

Natalie didn't resist when Nick pushed her back onto the bed, nor when
he laid down beside her. They lay together facing one another, gently
touching each other for several minutes and Natalie was the first to
break the spell by pushing Nick onto his back and straddling his waist,
carefully avoiding his straining erection. Her touches were feather
light and baby soft. Her nails, always neatly trimmed, lightly teased his
nipples, thighs and arms. She leaned back as far as she could, to give
the soles of his feet the same teasing touches, and was mildly
disappointed to discover that he wasn't in the least bit ticklish, but
she also wasn't really surprised.
Once she'd finished exploring his body with her hands, she moved off of
his waist and set to work kissing every inch of him with her warm, wet
mouth. She still carefully avoided his rigid member, however.
Nick moaned and sighed softly, as Natalie took her time memorizing his
body with her hands and lips. When she finally touched his penis, she did
so with such delicacy that Nick scarcely felt it at all. Natalie
gradually increased the pressure of her fingers around his shaft, leaning
forward to lick the tip, before pulling it into her mouth. She wrapped
her tongue around it, sucking as if it were a sweet, sticky lollipop.
Nick finally pulled Natalie away from his shaft and slid her up the
length of his body, rolling them over so that she laid on her back, and
then he kissed her deeply. He brushed feather-soft kisses on her chin and
cheeks, before moving to lightly suckle at her breasts. He sucked on each
one in turn, bringing the nipples to taut little points before exploring
her body with the same intensity that she'd shown in her discovery of
him. He used his hands and fingers first, touching, teasing and, to
Natalie's chagrin, tickling. He grinned when she squirmed and laughed
when she squealed in protest as his touch became a bit firmer along her
ribcage and on the soles of her feet. He finally relented and went back
to gentle caresses and kisses.
He kissed down the inside of one thigh and back up the other, tenderly
spreading her legs. Nuzzling her pubic hair and inhaling her scent, he
sighed softly before looking up at her with a quirky grin. Then he darted
his tongue out and tapped her clitoris, causing her to jerk in response.
Placing his hands on her hips, he held her down and began lightly licking
and sucking on her clit.
Natalie gasped and moaned, rocking her hips in slow rhythm to his
sucking. She was nearing her peak when Nick suddenly stopped. Lifting her
head from the pillow, she was about to ask him why he'd stopped, but she
smiled as he slid up and covered her body with his own, capturing her
mouth with his own.
He moved so that his penis was poised and ready to enter her, looking
into her eyes. "I love you, Natalie." He said softly. "If you want to
stop, it has to be now. I'll need your blood to reach orgasm, so I won't
be able to stop once we start."
Natalie smiled tenderly. "I know, Nick. I trust you." She reached
between their bodies to guide him into her tight opening, crying out with
pleasure as he slowly filled her completely.
Nick was still for a moment, allowing her body to adjust to him, before
he began thrusting slowly in and out of her hot core. His movements were
slow and measured; pulling nearly completely out before thrusting back in
as far as he could go.
Natalie rocked her hips in time to his thrusts and wrapped her arms
around him as tightly as she could.
"Nick! Oh god! Don't stop! Please! Don't stop!" She cried out, as she
grew ever closer to her orgasm.
Nick could sense that Natalie was on the verge and increased the speed
and depth of his thrusts, growling and grunting with the strain of
controlling the vampire so as not to hurt her. His heart swelled with
male pride as Natalie cried out in release and he watched the play of
emotions on her face. When she turned her head to the side in
encouragement, he could wait no longer.
Sinking his fangs into her pliant neck, Nick exploded in release,
spurting his cool seed into her fiery womb. He shuddered twice, before
releasing her and collapsing on top of her.
"I love you." Natalie whispered, kissing Nick's brow. "God how I love
you..."
Nick smiled warmly at her and rolled off of her, pulling her into his
arms and covering her with the blankets. "I love you, too, Natalie. More
than you'll ever know." He told her, kissing her temple.
They fell into a deep slumber, content in each other's arms.

When they awoke that evening they made love again and showered
together, before going downstairs to get something to eat. They sat at
the table chatting quietly, each enjoying their breakfast.
"So was Schanke okay when you took him home last night?" Nat asked Nick
around a mouthful of bagel.
Nick chuckled. "Yes. I know why he reacted the way he did, too." He said
mischievously, taking another sip from his glass.
Nat looked at him inquiringly. "Yeah? Tell me."
Nick pursed his lips a moment, before replying. "You remember that case
we had with the stripper a little while back?" When Nat nodded, he
continued. "We had a discussion about what kinds of things turn guys on.
He said for him, it was autumn days, plaid skirts and knee socks."
Natalie's eyes widened and her mouth opened slightly, and then she
chuckled. "Oh my! That is too much!" She exclaimed gleefully. "*Knee
socks?*"
Nick laughed, too. "It's a good thing you opted for those cute little
anklets instead, or we just might have lost him to a heart attack."
Natalie's eyes widened and she pursed her lips, as she considered that.
"Just don't tell him I said anything to you. I don't think he'd like
it." Nick told her.
Nat held up her right hand. "I promise." She finished the last bite of
her bagel and then swallowed another mouthful of orange juice. "You know,
you don't have to buy that outfit for me."
Nick raised an eyebrow. "I want to. I'd like to see you wear it again."
Nat grinned and shook her head. "Oh, no, it's not that. I already bought
it. I found it on a website and purchased it, when I was looking for my
Halloween costume. I already own it."
Nick's grin turned lecherous. "What website?"
"Oh no. No, no, no." Nat said, standing and placing her dishes in the
sink. "Do you know what kinds of things they sell on that website?"
Nick gave her a mock innocent look. "What kinds?"
Natalie wagged a finger at him, as he stood and moved towards her. He
caught her around the waist as she tried to get past him, and carried her
to the sofa. Tossing her lightly onto the cool leather, he began tickling
her ribs. "Give up?" He asked.
Nat squirmed and struggled for several more minutes, laughing and
pounding futilely on his back. "Okay, okay! It's adameve.com! Stop
already!" She shouted through her laughter.
Nick relented and stretched out on top of her. "I knew you'd see it my
way." He grinned.
Natalie, still breathless, smacked him lightly on the chest. "That's not
fair! You're not ticklish!"
Nick continued to grin like a Cheshire cat. "I know. But just wait until
you find out what kind of fun we can have with the stuff we buy off of
that site." He nuzzled her neck, and then grinned lecherously at her
again, waggling his eyebrows suggestively. "We may just have to take a
week off of work to explore the possibilities."
Nat looked him in the eyes and then suddenly returned his grin. "I'll
race you to the computer!"
